ToK in May – Big Question #2

What is the purpose of knowledge, and how can we assess its value?

Often students are motivated to select subjects based on a subject’s perceived value.

Areas of Knowledge in Theory of Knowledge include but are not limited to: History, Mathematics, The Arts, Natural Sciences,
Human Sciences, Religious Knowledge Systems and Indigenous Knowledge Systems and each of these Areas of Knowledge will have some aspects of methodology that overlap, there is also great diversity in the way each Area produces knowledge.

Is possible to consider, that if the Areas of Knowledge are used in conjunction that the opportunities to produce knowledge can be increased?

David Kelly founder of the IDEQ Design Firm gives us some clarity around the nature of knowledge and the value of
appreciating difference in the Areas of Knowledge.

Let us not limit the production of knowledge on the basis of perceived value; rather use that very difference to produce
knowledge and in the words of Alice, be “curiouser and curiouser” (Carroll: 1865).
