Year 11 Biology Shelly Beach Excursion

On October 18th and 19th 2018, students from Year 11 Biology travelled to Shelly Beach, Caloundra to investigate the population abundance and distribution of the various organisms found living on the rocky platform.

Even though the weather was against them, the Mountain Creek State High School students were able to gather all sorts of information over the
two days. This included abiotic data, such as how dissolved
oxygen and salinity of the water in the rock pools changed over the course of a day, and biotic data detailing how the populations of different species changed in relation to distance from the ocean.

All of this information was gathered along a transect line that ran from the high-tide mark to a few metres
from the ocean. This data was later analysed and presented
in a report that comprised the last piece of assessment for
Biology in 2018. Special thanks should be given to the teachers
from the Bilai Environmental Education Centre who facilitated
the research over the two days.
