​​​​​Mountain Creek State High School has two school based youth health nurses who can be accessed by a referral.

What does a youth health nurse do?

Work collaboratively and in partnership with the school as part of the school support team to promote health and well-being for the young person and the whole school community.

Individual consultations

Provide accessible, appropriate health service for students, teachers and parents. They may be referred by HOD/HOY/Admin or self refer re issues that impact their health and well-being i.e. relationships, feeling unhappy or stressed, healthy lifestyle, sexual health, personal and family conflict, smoking, alcohol and other drug problems, growth and development, mental health, anxiety, depression etc.

Group work

Facilitate support groups, which are offered to support young people and their family i.e. Laughter, Yoga, Foundation for the Future (Equine Therapy), Beyond Blue, Resilience Program etc.

Resources

Assist in accessing and providing health information for the whole school community i.e. curriculum activities or public health issues. Organising outside providers to be guest speakers for health promotion where requested i.e. Integrated Family and Youth Service, Save A Mate (FOCUS).

Help with curriculum teaching and learning activities and support health promotion in school

Growth and development, immunisations, sexual health, alcohol & drugs, mental health, domestic violence etc.

Youth health nurse does not provide

Treatment such as medications, injections, first-aid and physical examinations.
